Mobile Me – iDisk

The Mobile Me account contains one thing that I really look forward to using – iDisk.

This is a shared online space where you can store, backup and access your data on the web from your PC, Mac or iPhone.

Problem is that I have some difficulties accessing it from my XP PC.
The Network map to http://idisk.me.com/<Username> brings up the login dialog but it does not accept my login.

So I found a thread that used the iDisk Utility for Windows (back from the .Mac times) and it worked like a charm.

This tool makes some changes to the hosts file:

17.250.248.77    idisk0.mac.com idisk1.mac.com idisk2.mac.com…

and then maps a network drive to :

\\idisk0.mac.com\<Username>

Get the iDisk Utility for Windows here.

Update: If you get a message regarding the hosts file (“Unable to acces your hosts file”) try the following (found here):

  1. Open the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ directory
  2. Right-click on the hosts file and select Properties.
  3. Uncheck the box that says “Read-only” and hit Apply.
  4. Now, retry the iDisk utility on your PC.$
