For some days now, reports have been in that jailbroken iPhones are vulerable to attacks.
There was a first worm that “only” Rickrolled the user but now, there is a malicious one out that can grab confidential information and basically spy on you at any moment.
While Apple tells you that it’s your fault (which it basically is), we tell you how to secure your iPhone against such attacks.

Now today I did some digging for information because I really miss some apps:

– Clippy
– Cycorder
– Emoji
– hClipboard
– Notifier
– Qik
– SBSettings
– ScummVM

and others…

So what I found is that I made a stupid mistake.

It seems that you have to:

Restore your phone to 2.2.1 in iTunes

Then activate it

and only then Jailbreak it

And restore the backup

As I left out the activation the phone never got properly activated (I guess QuickPwn somhow did that for me… but that left the phone in some GuruMeditation state with a disabled phone component).

So now I’m happily loading my missed apps to the iPhone…

So I did Jailbreak again and restored the backup. At first sight everything was OK, except that in the car when heading home, I saw that the phone reception was bricked (baseband ?). So I had no phone for 12 hours (the time to get back to my PC which I left at work) and had to restore again.
For the time being I’m not jailbreaking and am running with the basic (Apple approved) applications.

And you know what: the phone is way snappier and I have more free memory even under heavy use (BeatMaker, …) meaning less reboots needed, which is quite rewarding.
So it’s the one (iPhone without chains) or the other (snappier more responsive iPhone), I guess…

Now first try, directly update to 2.2.1 and re-jailbreak results in an infinite boot loop where the phone reboots every 5 minutes or so. This was somewhat foreseeable but you never know you could be lucky…

Second try, restore the phone firmware, then restore the backup then jailbreak. boot loop again. Now that is starting to to be a long update…

After some digging I found some infos on apps blocking correct jaiilbreaking, meaning that you should:

First : Restore Firmware

Second: Jailbreak

Third: Restore the backup

So I’m happily restoring (again) and then trying to do the rest…

Just a short note to those like me that have problems with Cydia crashing right at startup.

The problem comes apparently from the Touch-Mania repository and is described here (in German only, sorry).

Following their steps did indeed correct the problem I had.

So I’ll give you the translation:

Connect to your iPhone with WinSCP / Cyberduck

Go to the /private/etc/apt/sources.list.d directory and delete the file touch-mania.com.list

Or connect via SSH and type the following: rm -rf /private/etc/apt/sources.list.d/touch-mania.com.list

This should make Cydia start again.

You’ll probably have to reinstall the Touch-Mania repository:

In Cydia click on search, and select for “Touch-Mania”

Click on Modify and then Reinstall

That did it for my iPhone…
